Selectmen approve Historic Properties appointment, table pension-board candidate; resident submits written warning about budget's effect on seniors

The East Lyme Board of Selectmen appointed Carol Anne Gordon of 26 Broadway as a regular member of the Historic Properties Commission on June 3, setting her term to expire Jan. 3, 2028.
The board moved and seconded the nomination and recorded the motion as carried. Separately, the board discussed a pension‑board resume that had been submitted; members said they preferred to follow their usual vetting procedure so the board agreed to table that appointment and forward the resume to the appropriate committee and continue advertising the alternate opening.
Under communications, the clerk read a written statement from resident Maxine Defusco (15 Oswagotchi Hill Road) asking that her comment be entered into the minutes. Defusco wrote that a yes vote on the June 4 budget referendum "significantly increases personal property taxes for many of our seniors who already struggle to pay property taxes on homes in which they have lived for many years while trying to budget on fixed incomes." She requested the town consider freezing property taxes for seniors and disabled individuals as some states do.
Board members also provided routine reports: cancellations of several commission meetings for lack of complaints, Brookside Farm Museum's summer concert series dates, upcoming East Lyme graduation dates, a tree planting in memory of Abe Fischer, and the announced retirement of Harbor Management Shellfish Commissioner Steve Dinsour, which will create a forthcoming vacancy.
