Cedar Drive Middle School flagged for chronic absenteeism; district to present corrective action plan

Superintendent Mrs Volby told the board on Jan. 22 that Cedar Drive Middle School was designated as having chronic absenteeism for the 2023–24 school year, reporting a 16.6% rate. Under state guidance, a school crosses the chronic absenteeism threshold when more than 10% of students are absent 18 or more days.
"Cedar Drive fell at 16.6% for the 23–24 school year and as a result ... the district is required to do a corrective action plan," Mrs Volby said. She outlined that the CAP process includes surveying parents, consulting staff and students, and drafting interventions aligned to observed trends.
The superintendent said Dr. Rigby and Dr. Reynolds will present the corrective action plan at a future February board meeting, as required for public discussion and board review. Mrs Volby said the CAP remains in place until the school's absentee rate falls below 10%.
Board members and the administration emphasized outreach to families and the parent advisory committee; the district indicated targeted interventions and tiered supports will be used, with further details to be shared when the CAP is presented.
