Commission agrees to remove Lakeside sandbox, schedules volunteer cleanups for July and September

The Holly Parks Commission agreed on June 3 to remove the sandbox at Lakeside Park after residents raised public-health concerns that cats were using it as a litter box.
Commissioners said they had “all kind of come to agreement” that the sandbox should be removed and asked staff to handle the timing and logistics. The decision followed several residents’ complaints and commissioners’ concern that children could be exposed to hazards.
The group also set dates for volunteer park cleanups and discussed volunteer rules. The commission scheduled a summer cleanup on July 27 at 9:00 a.m. and a fall cleanup on Sept. 26 at 9:00 a.m. Members discussed whether start times should be earlier in hot weather and whether volunteers may perform only maintenance tasks (trash removal, weeding, graffiti cleanup) while structural changes or plantings should remain under staff or formal approval.
Commissioners reminded residents that the village maintains a volunteer participation form and recommended volunteers check with staff before making changes that affect plantings or structures. A member thanked a resident, Amber, for privately helping remove thorny bushes around playground equipment.
Next steps: staff to coordinate sandbox removal logistics and publicize cleanup volunteer opportunities and any required participation forms.
