At the start of its June 2 meeting, the Meeker County Board of Commissioners appointed two residents to serve on the county canvassing board for the upcoming elections.
County financial officer Heather asked the board for two members — preferably people who are not on the ballot — to serve on the canvassing board for the primary (Aug. 14) and general election (Nov. 13). Two volunteers were identified and a motion was made and seconded to appoint Darren Samki and Paul Johnson to the county canvassing board. The motion carried by voice vote.
Why it matters: the canvassing board reviews and oversees election results for the county; state law generally requires impartial boards for certification. Heather noted there are no special qualifications beyond not being a candidate on the ballot.
Next steps: appointees will be available to meet immediately after each election to review and certify results as required by county procedures.
