On policy 2120, several trustees raised concerns about how background-check findings would be used, whether fingerprinting should be required, and the risk that poorly defined rules could be "weaponized." Miss Geller (human-resources staff) and other administrators explained that HR applies hard rules (for example, felonies within seven years and crimes against children make an applicant ineligible for employment) and uses professional judgment in gray-area cases. Trustees debated whether the superintendent or the board would manage any operational consequences.
After procedural votes and an appeal of the chair's ruling on an amendment, the board voted to adopt policy 2120 aligning board members to Level 2 volunteer requirements as presented in the packet (the transcript records the final vote as passing '4-3'). The addition of fingerprinting was ruled out of order at the time of that vote; trustees discussed returning to the matter.
On policy 4318, Dr. Merrick called for an added clause to "protect whistleblowers who do take video or pictures of other students if there is inappropriate activity" so students who capture bullying or misconduct are not punished. The board voted to send policy 4318 back to the policy committee to add whistleblower protections; the motion passed unanimously among those recorded.
The meeting record shows the board will return both items to policy committee for any technical edits and implementation details; several trustees requested clearer, codified definitions about what findings would trigger restrictions on access to school premises and whether those decisions would be handled publicly.
