Waunakee board approves $3,550 startup contribution for new farmers market

The funding request originally sought $9,182 to cover startup costs including tents, marketing and a special event permit. Applicant Nick summarized the budget and said the money would support initial setup costs. Multiple trustees said they supported funding durable one‑time items rather than ongoing operating costs.

"One‑time costs or things that can't be replicated elsewhere seem appropriate to me," Trustee Kristen Rung said, urging the board to prioritize items that make the market sustainable beyond its first season.

Trustees discussed village budget constraints and the potential for other community groups to request similar startup funding. Jack Heinman and other trustees said they were cautious about creating a future precedent but acknowledged the market's community value. Trustee Renee recommended giving the money up front and asking the market to submit receipts for the specified purchases afterward.
