Sports commission, Bicycle Advisory Committee push for better bike-to-park connections and coordination

Cynthia Palmer and David Ancel of the Bicycle Advisory Committee joined members of the Sports Commission to discuss aligning trails and bicycle access with athletic facilities and programming.
Palmer described the BAC’s focus on road safety, intersection improvements and connections between trails and public facilities. “We are focused on road safety ... and intersection-focused in particular because that is where the crashes and the deaths are happening,” she said, describing committee priorities and long-term advocacy.
David Ancel, who said he has served on the BAC for several years, emphasized connections and accessibility: “My hope … is to improve bicycling in the county and bicycling infrastructure and to make it accessible to as many people as possible.”
Commission members discussed practical coordination steps: compiling priority lists of trail-to-facility connections, sharing usage data for recreational facilities, and aligning field-trail access improvements with planned capital projects such as the boathouse and Long Bridge-area facilities. Commissioners also raised an internal coordination issue: they said Department of Environmental Services staff reduced direct participation with advisory committees several years ago, which made technical coordination harder; committee members said they have repeated the concern to county management.
Sports Commission members signaled they will ask the new commission chair and staff to pursue a fall joint meeting format that would allow breakout discussion after an in-person presentation. BAC members offered to share letters and prioritized connection maps to support project reviews.
What’s next: BAC and Sports Commission agreed to exchange materials and consider joint field trips and a prioritized list of trail/connection projects for commission input.
