Airport staff gave an informational briefing on May 14 about requirements for cranes and other structures that can affect navigable airspace. The presenter explained FAA review under Title 14, Part 77, the airport's sponsor assurances tied to federal grants, and local tools (navigation easements and zoning height limits) used to manage obstructions.
"One is 14 title 14 of the code of federal regulations part 77 which has the somewhat lengthy title of safe efficient use and preservation of navigable airspace," the presenter said, describing the FAA's online screening tool and how applicants should submit proposed structures for review.
Staff explained that enforcement is primarily a local responsibility — handled through planning, building safety and lease terms — and described coordination with the FAA and other agencies when potential hazards arise. The presenter cited the hospital development and a tech park lease as past examples where the airport engaged during planning and permitting.
On scheduling, staff said several commissioners would be traveling after early June and asked whether to cancel the June 11 meeting or move it. With no objections heard, the commission agreed to cancel the June meeting and reconvene in July. The meeting adjourned at 14:24 after a motion to adjourn by Commissioner Sha.
No formal regulatory enforcement actions were taken at the meeting; staff said they will continue to review development proposals and work with city planning staff when projects in the airport's approach surfaces are proposed.
