Commission issues determination for septic repair at 212 South Main Street

The Cohasset Conservation Commission closed the public hearing for RDA 26-09 (212 South Main Street) and issued a −3/−6 determination of applicability with conditions.
James Garfield, a registered engineer with Morse Engineering, presented a proposal to replace a failing Title 5 septic system for the property currently occupied by a four-bedroom single-family house. The proposal calls for a new 1,500-gallon septic tank, a five-outlet distribution box and a leaching field; the closest point of proposed work to bordering vegetated wetland is 93.2 feet. The applicant said the system location is chosen to achieve a gravity-fed design rather than a pumped system and proposed an 8-inch mulch sock down-gradient as erosion control during construction.
Commissioners and staff asked for confirmation about the location of the existing failing tank, test pits and the limit-of-work. Staff recommended standard conditions for projects within the 100-foot buffer, including staking of limit-of-work and inspected erosion controls. Commissioner Kathy Beran and others supported adding the condition that any repositioning that extends further into the buffer would require further commission approval.
Chair Chris McIntyre moved to close the hearing and issue the determination with the noted conditions. The commission voted in favor (roll call: 4-0). The determination requires the erosion-control barriers be staked prior to construction and that the conservation agent be notified before work begins.
