District outlines summer learning and 37 paid internships through Workforce Ignite

District staff presented Lenoir County Public Schools' summer learning opportunities and workforce-development placements at the June 1 board meeting.
The annual Ready to Achieve summer reading program for second- and third-graders is funded by statute and the district's allocated amount is approximately $110,000. Camps operate Monday through Thursday and teacher selection prioritizes those who previously earned reading performance bonuses. Migrant-student camps and a 21st Century grant-funded enrichment camp (two weeks in July) were described; secondary camps include healthcare- and robotics-focused offerings, entrepreneurship, credit recovery and a ninth-grade bridge camp.
Dr. Amy Jones detailed the Workforce Ignite placements: 37 students were placed in paid internships and youth apprenticeships at eight host sites, representing fields from maintenance, welding and machining to law enforcement, district operations and media. Host partners named in the presentation include local employers, the Kinston Police Department, Lenoir Community College partnerships (ACE Aviation Center), and district departments such as maintenance and technology. A signing-day celebration for participants is scheduled June 3.
The board was encouraged to attend the event and staff said there is still room for enrollments in some programs. No budget increases were proposed at the meeting for summer programming beyond stated grant and statutory allocations.
