The Southaven Board of Aldermen authorized staff to apply for a federal Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) to replace 56 self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBAs) for the fire department.
A staff member told the board the replacement is a high priority because many units are nearing the end of their service lives. The grant, if awarded, “could potentially provide $645,000 of the $800,000 estimated costs for those units,” the presenter said. The board approved the request to apply; if the city receives the grant, city staff will return to the board with details on the use of awarded funds.
Board members voted without further discussion. The authorization allows the fire department to pursue competitive federal funding to reduce the city’s share of equipment replacement costs; it does not obligate the city to accept or spend grant funds until the award is presented and approved by the board.
