Milan Area Schools board adopts 2025–26 budget amendments and approves preliminary 2026–27 budgets

The Milan Area Schools Board of Education voted unanimously to adopt final amendments to the district’s 2025–26 budgets and to approve preliminary budgets for 2026–27 and the district’s general appropriations act.
Finance Director Christa Hendris told trustees the June amendments (Attachments A–E) reflect the most accurate information available to staff and that June is the last opportunity to change the fiscal‑year budgets before the audit. “The June amendment is the last time that we have the ability to change our budgets,” Hendris said, adding the amendments prevent negative balances that would trigger state compliance actions.
Trustees then considered a second reading and vote on preliminary budgets for 2026–27 (Attachments F–K). Hendris said the 2026–27 figures are preliminary: the district assumed a $250 per‑pupil foundation increase and reduced the student count by 30 from the February count to match current enrollment trends. She warned that market‑driven cost increases and pending state revenue information could change the estimates. “Please understand that the budget that has been presented to you is preliminary,” Hendris said.
Board members pressed for ongoing updates and said they expect administration to present revised revenue and expense assumptions as actual data arrives. Superintendent McMahon and trustees discussed the likelihood the district will pursue additional budget amendments during 2026–27 and that the finance committee may meet more formally during the year to review material changes.
Votes on the set of current‑year amendments and on the preliminary 2026–27 budgets and general appropriations act were all recorded as unanimous. The board also heard that a Headlee rollback reduced the sinking‑fund millage and that the appropriations act carries no new tax dollars.
Next steps: administration will provide periodic updates to the board as final student counts and state revenue figures become available and will bring any necessary budget amendments to the board for consideration.
