Whitnall honors Officer Susie and K9 Gizmo; mayor proclaims June 3 'Officer Susie and Gizmo Day'

Whitnall School District and the City of Greenfield on Thursday honored longtime school resource officer Suzy Ashworth — known in the event as Officer Susie — and her K9 partner Gizmo, with Mayor Mike Neitzke reading a city proclamation naming June 3, 2026 as "Officer Susie and Gizmo Day."

The event, hosted by a district representative, celebrated Susie's 15 years as the district's school resource officer and Gizmo's six years serving students and staff in Whitnall schools. A student-produced video played during the ceremony, with students thanking the pair "for 15 years" of protection, mentorship and comfort.

Mayor Mike Neitzke read the proclamation recognizing Susie's 23 years with the Greenfield Police Department and highlighting her role as a mentor and educator in the schools. The proclamation text included the mayor's formal declaration: "Now, therefore, I, Mayor Mike Neitzke, by virtue of the authority vested in me as mayor, do hereby proclaim June 3rd, 2026 as Officer Susie and Gizmo Day in the City of Greenfield."

Cindy Collins, Whitnall High School principal, spoke on behalf of Officer Susie and Gizmo, saying Susie will be transitioning back to patrol but hopes to continue seeing families in the community. Collins thanked them for "their incredible dedication and service to our Whitnall community."

Students presented gifts and a plaque made by a district shop class; the host noted the plaque included an etched sticker and words of appreciation. Event organizers invited attendees to stay for photos and light refreshments after the ceremony.

No formal vote or ordinance accompanied the proclamation; it was read publicly at the event and will serve as a ceremonial recognition by the city of Greenfield.
