Council approves summer event permits for Junth Festival, River Classic, Pride and other community gatherings

Organizers for a slate of summer events told the Oklahoma City Council on June 2 that the city’s parks and riverfront will host thousands of residents for festivals, regattas and races, and the council approved permits for each event.
Perry Publishing & Broadcasting described the Junth Art & Music Festival at Washington Park (June 19–21), including a Friday evening jazz program and a full Saturday schedule. Conor, speaking for the promoter, said the festival offers family programming and urged council members to attend. Councilman Payton moved approval and the council approved the permit unanimously.
Representatives of the Riversport Foundation sought permits for two river events. Trisha Downey, who identified herself as national event manager for Riversport, introduced Tiffany Briggs, the Riverbull Classic planning committee chair, who described a fifth‑anniversary rowing regatta and community celebration planned for Aug. 1 along the Oklahoma River. Downey also summarized the Stars and Stripes regatta — a one‑day Independence Day program that will run full‑day races, a dragonboat festival and evening sprints under stadium lighting. Council members expressed support and approved both Riversport permits.
Christian Trailer and Eric Jones, representing OKC Pride Community Outreach, asked for approval of OKC Pride on 39th Street (June 5–7), with opening ceremonies scheduled for June 5 at 5 p.m. Rachel Crawford, executive director of the Plaza District, described Live on the Plaza events (June 12 and Aug. 14) and the 27th annual Plaza District Festival on Sept. 26, noting the district’s 65 businesses and expectations of large crowds for both events. Melissa Hodgson of Red Coyote Running & Fitness requested approval for the Junth on the East 5K (June 19, ~7:00 p.m.), reporting registrations have more than doubled and roughly 3,000 participants are expected. Morgan Danker with OKC Parks described the Treat Trot at Lake Hefner, noting race starts, a kids dash, early packet pickup and a partnership to include adoptable dogs on the course.
Council members praised the events as community builders and moved to approve the permits as presented; all permits on the consent/permit docket passed by unanimous vote.
The council’s approvals clear the way for several major public gatherings over the summer and early fall, including family festivals, athletic competitions and cultural celebrations along the riverfront and in neighborhood commercial districts.
