Officials say revised jail drawings are more affordable; plan to send package to BAND Board

County staff reported that preliminary jail drawings have been approved by the engineering consultant and the sheriff and that those drawings are expected to be more affordable and within the project's budget.
Jamie, a county staff member, told the board that DLZ and the sheriff had approved the preliminary drawings and that the package will be submitted to the Bureau of Adult Detention (BAND) Board for phase 1 review. "They approved the preliminary drawings that were presented to us and that we believe is more affordable and within our budget," Jamie said.
Jamie said the plan now calls for the BAND Board review and, before additional solicitation, a third-party cost analysis to reduce the risk of earlier bid problems. Staff described a 12-week timeline that begins once the BAND Board accepts the submission and the county expects a phased approach (phase 1, then later phases) to follow.
Commissioners asked clarifying questions about contractor outreach and cost controls; Jamie said the county had reached out to two contractors in the Columbus area and that the new approach reduces per-square-foot cost compared with earlier designs by favoring a ranch-style block design instead of fabricated steel cells. The board did not take a formal vote on the project during this session beyond approving the staff update and directing follow-up work.
