ZEBULUN — The Zebulun Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a resolution May 4 authorizing the town manager to negotiate a facility‑use agreement with Mount Zion Holiness Church to restore temporary recreation amenities and programming for Gil Street Park neighbors.
Parks & Recreation Director Sheila Long outlined the proposal: Mount Zion will host recreation amenities (a basketball hoop, picnic table and trash receptacle) and provide weekday building access to support programs; the town would pay $1,200 per month to compensate for installed amenities and building access. Director Long described the arrangement as a near‑term solution while the town pursues permanent park facilities and to help restore recreation uses after issues at a nearby, partially regulated landfill constrained on‑site improvements.
Pastor Bachelor, who the town said has recently retired from Wake County Public Schools and will chair a new 'Friends of Gil Street' committee, spoke in favor of collaboration and local programming. “We understand the importance of recreation for our community,” the pastor told the board.
Commissioners praised the partnership as a positive, low‑cost way to bring programs and services to neighborhood residents while the town develops longer‑term park plans. The board voted to authorize resolution 2026‑24 directing the manager to develop and execute the facility‑use agreement.
