South Windsor Patriotic Commission honors student essay and poster winners at council meeting

Corsi said the contest is intended to encourage reflections on patriotism in forms ranging from military service to community volunteering; he noted entry levels were lower this year (21 students) and the commission will work to broaden participation in future years. High‑school and middle‑school first‑place winners read essays in council chambers describing personal connections to remembrance, service and freedoms experienced in South Windsor.
A 12th‑grade student who introduced herself as Naveena Crafts Sutherland read about a visit to the National September 11th Memorial and Museum and linked that memory to family military service and community responsibility. Middle‑school winner Akshita Jay read about freedom of speech, education and local community traditions such as Memorial Day observances.
The council, councilors and parents greeted the readings with thanks and invited winners forward for a group photo. Town officials said they would consider filming or preserving standout remarks and will continue to encourage student participation in coming years.
