John Spratlin, chairman of the Scarborough 85 Monument Committee, briefed the council on the monument project and invited council members and residents to a final design presentation on Tuesday, June 25 at 2:00 p.m. at the senior center.
Spratlin said the committee has worked from a concept toward final design and expects the design session to produce a firm bottom-line construction cost; the project previously has been discussed in draft terms at roughly $2.9 million. He told the council the committee has raised about $400,000 so far and asked for help publicizing the project beyond Oak Ridge to pursue state and national recognition and additional funding opportunities.
Council members and committee representatives said they have engaged the congressman's office and staff to clarify what federal mechanisms might support the effort, and staff indicated the city will help explore grant opportunities. Council thanked the committee and encouraged attendance at the design session.
The committee said the June 25 meeting will include architects and engineers producing final design details; the design review should clarify scope, materials and a more precise cost estimate to guide continued fundraising and potential grant applications.
The council did not take formal action at the meeting; the committee will return to council or staff with next steps after the design session.
