Smithton board approves Turner's parade resolution and addresses roadside sign dispute

The Village of Smithton board on May 19 approved Resolution 2026-08 to permit Turner's parade on July 11, 2026, at 5 p.m., and authorized Mayor Michael Smallwood to sign the resolution. The motion to approve Resolution 2026-08 was moved by Trustee Todd Reyling, seconded by Trustee Jim Mourey, and carried on a unanimous roll-call vote.
During the Good of the Village portion, Terris Stahl of ATS asked the board for permission to place a sign in the grass strip between the sidewalk and the curb. Board members noted that the strip lies in the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) right-of-way along Route 159; Terris said Walton’s places a sign there every year but that he was told last year by Chief Jason Neff he could not place his sign because it obstructed drivers' views. Mayor Michael Smallwood said he would have Chief Neff ask Walton’s to move their sign.
Other administrative items reported to the board included an update that three police officers are scheduled to begin the academy on Monday, that Safe Routes to School award notification is expected soon, that Park Master Plan consultant interviews are scheduled for June 9, and that a Motor Fuel Tax (MFT) chip-and-seal bid opening is scheduled for Friday at 10:00 a.m. The board authorized payment of bills and payroll later in the meeting and adjourned at 7:44 p.m.
The minutes record board direction on the sign matter but show no formal enforcement motion; the Turner's Parade resolution was adopted by recorded vote.
