The Dorchester County Council unanimously approved a change to residential trash sticker sales on May 19, 2026, following a request from Solid Waste Manager John Cooney. Under the change, stickers will be sold only at the landfill main office, the Finance Department and via the county’s online system; the county will resume mailing stickers to previous holders. The move is intended to enhance security with credit-card-capable scale machines and reduce cash handling exposures. Checks will continue to be accepted at the Golden Hill location until a card machine is installed.
John Cooney told the Council the change would improve security and facilitate modern payment processing. Council members supported the change unanimously.
During public comment, resident David Beverley said he opposed ending cash sales at the Department of Solid Waste. The Council did not specify a firm date by which all locations would stop accepting cash; instead, it tied the timing to the installation of credit-card machines at the scales.
The change affects where residents buy residential trash stickers and how payments are accepted; staff said the county will communicate details to the public.
