Council appoints city historian, sets climate action hearing and previews United Way fee waiver

Mayor Safford announced the appointment of Matthew Veach as city historian and said the council set a public hearing for adoption of the municipal climate action plan. The mayor said two presentations are planned for Tuesday: a poetry reading by Poet Laureate Dr. Joseph Bruhack in recognition of Native American Heritage Month and a Municipal Climate Action Plan presentation by Michael Dutra.
The mayor also said the council will hear and vote on a request from United Way Greater Capital Region to waive the recreation center multipurpose room rental fee so the agency can host Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sessions three days a week between Jan. 15 and Apr. 15 from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The mayor described the VITA coalition as an 18‑organization partnership of more than 100 volunteers that provides free tax preparation for low‑income residents.
Public safety preview items included setting a Dec. 2 public hearing to amend vehicle and traffic rules for alternate‑street parking on Westbury Drive, Buff Road and Woodbridge Court, an authorization to sign an agreement for a school resource officer with St. Clemens Regional Catholic School and Saratoga Central Schools, and payment for ambulance repairs to Romeo Ford.
Next steps: hearings and votes on these items are scheduled at the upcoming Tuesday meeting; the council adjourned after confirming the agenda additions and appointments.
