Forage-fish monitoring, eelgrass plantings and Elwha sampling capacity spotlight Clallam MRC meeting

Chelsea and Tim presented the forage-fish team’s monitoring work and linked the effort to recent habitat restoration. Chelsea described eelgrass planting efforts that followed mitigation for a pier installation: thousands of eelgrass shoots have been planted across multiple events, and the team is tracking habitat recovery and whether forage-fish eggs respond.

Chelsea said monthly sampling provides an important long-term index: photographic records and samples across sites — including Elwha East and West — are aiding understanding of shifting sediment and habitat conditions after dam removal. She noted some sites are dynamic and that the program’s value is as a long-term dataset tied to regional restoration work.

Tim raised an operational question about protocol language saying sites without eggs after a period might be dropped; he reported he is following up with WDFW and contract documents to confirm whether and how the program must be adjusted. Participants flagged a capacity bottleneck: the team currently relies on external processing (WDFW or partners) and discussed options such as tribal lab space, WCC placements, or hiring additional staff to process more samples and expand monitoring.

The committee also announced Olympia oyster monitoring set for June 1–3 and a 10‑week Pigeon Guillemot monitoring program beginning the first week of June. Members encouraged volunteers and noted opportunities for outreach, educational videos and partnerships to raise visibility and support for monitoring work.
