County wins CRAB funds; Olympic Highway overlay planned for 2027 with local match

County staff told commissioners the county’s second application to the County Road Administration Board’s rural arterial program was successful in securing funding for overlay work on Olympic Highway.
"We actually applied for the $1,200,000, but only got the $800," said the presenter (S9). He said CRAB has a maximum award of $1.2 million per project per county, and that the county will plan the overlay work for 2027.
Staff described the project as rehabilitative surfacing—transforming a high-traffic gravel road that previously has only had chips into a hot-mix paved surface. Presenter S9 estimated that the county would cover about $200,000 from road funds for costs above the CRAB award.
Commissioners said they were pleased the application succeeded and discussed the program’s two-year cycle and typical application strategy. Staff said the award will be brought forward for authorization on the June 2 regular meeting agenda.
