Housing authority board approves amended HPP request to seek up to $600,000

The Clallam County Housing Authority board voted to amend its Housing Preservation Program application to ask the Washington State Department of Commerce for up to $600,000 to cover higher-than-anticipated costs.
Director Sarah Martinez told the board that recent cost estimates for Wildwood work ‘‘came back much higher than we had originally anticipated,’’ and that staff was returning to the board to ‘‘ask for an additional approval, for up to $600,000 for our app from Commerce on that.’’ The board had previously approved up to $500,000 as part of the earlier application.
Norma Turner moved adoption of the amended resolution (PHA2026‑09); Allison Mayo Mayfield seconded. The chair called for a voice vote and the motion carried. Martinez said the application was due immediately and staff planned to begin uploading the materials after the meeting.
Why it matters: The additional request is intended to close a gap between earlier estimates and current contractor bids so the preservation work can proceed without delay. Martinez said the architect is moving toward permitting and bidding, and that an approved larger grant would help secure the construction contract timeline.
What was said: ‘‘We received a bid for that work. That was not part of what I was pulling into the HPP in the original ask…we had an opportunity to get a little bit more money,’’ Martinez said. A board member noted the previous approval of up to $500,000 and asked for clarification; Martinez answered the amendment raises the total request to up to $600,000.
Next steps: With the amended resolution signed, staff said they would submit the application to Commerce and continue the procurement and permitting steps for the Wildwood/related preservation work.
