Health officials brief board on measles preparedness; schools 93.6% up to date on MMR

Madeline Benson, a public health and school nurse, said she and health partners met with hospital infection-prevention staff to align protocols for isolation, lab services and post-exposure treatment. She described immunoglobulin (IVIG/IMIG) as an available post-exposure option for certain exposed patients and said hospital staff were exploring whether to provide that locally rather than referring patients out of county.
Health staff reported the school system's vaccination coverage at 93.6 percent up to date for MMR, leaving roughly 6.4 percent (about 20 students) with medical or other exemptions. Under Washington Department of Health guidance discussed at the meeting, students with exposure who are not fully vaccinated would be asked to stay home for up to 21 days while being monitored for symptoms.
Officials reminded the public that measles can be contagious before rash onset and that antibody testing (titer) through a primary care provider can determine immunity. The health department said it does not directly provide routine vaccination clinics but will continue to coordinate with the hospital and primary-care providers for vaccine and post-exposure services as needed.
The board heard that the county will continue outreach to schools and health partners and that community surveys on youth substance use and wellness are planned under a separate prevention initiative.
