Commissioners appoint Kelsey Gable to library board after interviews

Columbia County commissioners interviewed three candidates for a vacancy on the library board and, following an executive session, appointed Kelsey Gable to the board.

Panel members asked each candidate the same set of questions about the role of a taxpayer-funded library, collection-development policies, age-appropriate materials, intellectual freedom and community trust. Candidate Kelsey Gable said libraries should provide broad access to materials and stressed transparency and community involvement. "I think that if you provide access to a broad range of materials...you can influence the community," Gable said during the interview.

Another candidate, Joe Ether, emphasized a content-neutral approach and said boards should rely on professional staff for day-to-day operations but maintain policy oversight. Ether said boards must listen to public concerns and incorporate professional guidance on developmentally appropriate materials.

After deliberation in executive session, a commissioner moved to appoint Kelsey Gable; the board voted and the chair announced the motion carried. Commissioners thanked all applicants and encouraged them to remain involved in library activities.

The board planned no further immediate action other than onboarding the new trustee and noted it would reconvene routine business following the appointment.
