Conservation commission grants administrative tree removal, records enforcement updates and grant coordination

The Tisbury Conservation Commission on May 19 approved an administrative request to remove 19 pitch pines at 966 Main Street to mitigate potential southern pine beetle infestation; the cleared areas will be replanted with shrubs such as beach plum, clethra and bayberry with at least 60% native species, the commission said. Conservation Agent Sean Young reported the trees are dead or dying and that the property lies within 100 feet of the flood zone.
Mr. Young clarified that the 60% native replanting figure was selected as a guideline above a 50% baseline to encourage native planting; the commission accepted the administrative approval and retained the 60% threshold. The administrative approval was recorded in the meeting minutes.
On enforcement items, Mr. Young reported the boat named Pegasus cited at Lagoon Pond Marsh next to Safe Harbor Marina has been removed and the enforcement matter is resolved; no fines were issued. Two related enforcement matters — one at 40 Cronig Avenue (Joseph B. Alexander Jr. Trustee) and one at 30 Cronig Avenue (Charyl L. Neal and Jonathan Dean Neal) regarding unauthorized placement of mulch and alteration of a coastal bank — were postponed at the owners' requests until they can be present.
In other business, Mr. Young said he is coordinating with the state Department of Transportation on Five Corners work in preparation for a Seaport Economic Grant application. The commission also noted a DEP denial of an Order of Conditions for a proposed 10-by-18.5-foot boat shed on posts at 52 Mill House Way (DEP 74-1011, MV Property Holdings LLC); the commission will address that matter at a subsequent meeting.
The commission unanimously approved the May 5, 2026 minutes and unanimously voted to adjourn at 4:50 p.m. The next scheduled meeting is June 2, 2026, at 4:00 p.m.
