District awards athletic trainer contract to Mount Hood Chiropractic Clinic for up to $200,000 a year

After the required seven‑day protest period elapsed with no successful protest recorded, staff recommended finalizing a contract not to exceed $200,000 per year with Mount Hood Chiropractic Clinic.
District staff explained the contract will fund one trainer for each high school (the proposal price is $95,000 per school per year for an 11‑month employee), to provide baseline screening, concussion protocol support, immediate care and rehabilitation and to support coaches and student athletes through seasons and summer camps. Board members noted athletic trainers provide both preventive services and emergency response that can be critical for student safety and for allowing teams to participate in sports.
The board voted to award the contract; staff said the contract includes provisions for coverage of state‑level competitions and extra hours when championship events require additional services.
Why it matters: Athletic trainers are a safety and risk‑management resource for high school sports; having trainers on site can reduce injury severity and help the district meet state requirements and best practices for athletic programs.
What’s next: District administration will finalize and execute the contract and oversee implementation at both Gresham High School and Sam Barlow High School.
