Chapel Hill Board of Adjustment recommends reappointments, nominates alternates to fill vacancies

The Chapel Hill Board of Adjustment on June 4 recommended a set of personnel actions to address vacancies created by a recent departure and upcoming term expirations.

The board voted 6-0 to recommend that the town council reappoint Dr. Wortman to a regular seat, reassign Mr. Weiner from an alternate to a regular seat, and reappoint David Nam to a full term as an alternate. That package of recommendations was moved, seconded and approved by roll call.

Board members then nominated and voted unanimously to recommend Randy Herman for one alternate seat. The staff liaison, Mr. Lagoon, said he had emailed applicants in advance; Julia Chamberlain had not yet responded to a single outreach attempt and the board agreed to try again and defer action on a possible second nomination until its next meeting. The board noted that the ETJ-reserved alternate seat is typically filled by the county and that the county’s 60-day appointment window has elapsed, which permits the town council to fill the seat.

A committee member expressed support for Herman, noting his commercial real-estate legal background as relevant to the board’s work. The chair clarified these recommendations are sent to town council for appointment; the reassignment of an alternate to a regular seat is an internal action staff will implement after the board’s vote.

The motion recommending reappointments and the recommendation for Herman both passed 6-0. Staff will continue outreach to Chamberlain and will bring any new information before the board at a later date.
