Taylor council adopts memorial-bench policy for Freeman Park, sets $500 sponsorship fee

The Taylor Town Council on July 3 adopted a policy to manage memorial benches at Freeman Park and new walking-path areas.
Town Manager Gus Lundberg said staff developed the policy after receiving at least three community requests to sponsor or place memorial benches. The policy requires town-approved benches that match existing mesh-style seating, limits placement to predetermined locations (including pavement "bump outs" prepared during recent paving work), and places plaques on a two‑inch metal face on the front of the bench for visibility. The plaque display is guaranteed for at least three years; extended display is possible if there is no waiting list for a location.
The policy sets a sponsorship fee of $500. Lundberg said the fee does not cover the full cost of the bench but helps fund additional benches and plaques. Council members emphasized uniformity and town control over placement and materials. The policy may be expanded to other parks or the local cemetery in the future.
Council Member Sherry Cosper Duke moved adoption of the policy; April Williams seconded. The motion passed unanimously.
