The Williamston mayor and council approved on first reading a budget amendment to spend up to $125,000 from town reserves to replace the heating and air-conditioning system in the town auditorium.
The mayor explained the building relies on six units, most of which are old and increasingly expensive to maintain. He presented two options: a conventional replacement (budgeted about $90,000) and a Mitsubishi variable refrigerant flow (VRF) system (budgeted about $125,000). He said the VRF system offers greater efficiency, larger warranties and quieter operation and noted the town frequently rents the auditorium on weekends, making reliable climate control important for users.
During discussion a council member said he was skeptical when contractors claim savings from higher upfront costs but voiced trust in the mayor’s judgment. The mayor described recurring maintenance calls and said the more efficient system could reduce operating costs over time. The mayor said staff intends to solicit public bids or requests for proposals for the work.
Council moved and seconded the amendment and approved the first reading by voice vote with no opposition. The mayor said a second reading will occur next month unless an urgent failure forces a special meeting.
