The Post Falls City Council on June 12, 2026, amended the city’s animal regulations to allow ducks on detached single-family lots and to clarify the permitted-animal point system for properties of one acre or larger.
Planning Division staff Justin Souder presented the change, describing the approach as treating ducks similarly to chickens and proposing a combined maximum of 12 hens and/or ducks on a detached single-family lot, of which no more than six may be ducks. Souder said the number was informed by a resident’s suggestion, a review of neighboring city rules (Hayden allows up to 10; Coeur d’Alene allows 4), and consultation with a duck expert who recommended more enclosure space for ducks than for chickens. He said standard setbacks and sanitation requirements remain in the code and that the one-acre point-based system continues to apply for larger properties.
Council confirmed the resident who requested the change had been contacted and, with no proposed amendments, moved to place the ordinance on its first and only reading while suspending the rules and then voted to adopt the ordinance by roll call. The ordinance will be published by summary and take effect according to law.
