Superintendent: enrollment rising, track resurfacing begins next week; district readies device policy ahead of Aug. 1 statute

Superintendent Diane told the Scarborough School Board on June 4 that enrollment is holding steady and pointed to growth in early grades: 52 pre-K students were registered for next year and 205 kindergarten students were registered compared with 186 this year. She said the district is continuing to monitor those trends.
Diane also updated the board on facilities work at the high school: the final surfacing and stripe painting for the track will begin next week, the contractor requires minimum temperatures (50°F overnight) and dry weather for the surface product to adhere, and the project is expected to take approximately 16 days. If weather cooperates, Diane said the facility should be reopened by the start of July.
On policy, Diane noted a Maine statute on personal electronic devices takes effect Aug. 1. The district’s policy committee has begun aligning local policy (moving from JFCK to model JICI naming) and drafting exceptions for students with IEPs, 504 plans, medical needs or translation requirements. She said procedures for the fall are being developed with school leaders and regional partners and will be finalized before the effective date.
Diane also highlighted senior events and staff recognition (coaches named state-level coach of the year) and said she will include the track schedule in the district newsletter and communications to families.
The board asked clarifying questions about the track timeline and whether the resurfacing will interfere with the start of fall sports; Diane replied the timing should not interfere and confirmed the reopening is expected early in the summer if the weather cooperates.
