Scarborough School Board approves appointments, adopts policies and accepts grants in unanimous votes

The Scarborough School Board on June 4 approved several personnel appointments, adopted multiple district policies at second reading and accepted two donations to support school programs.
In personnel action the board unanimously approved the appointment of Kim O'Donnell, PhD, as assistant superintendent. Diane, the superintendent, nominated O'Donnell and introduced her background, including prior Scarborough classroom experience and recent service as an assistant superintendent in Westbrook. O'Donnell spoke briefly, called the opportunity “a full circle moment” and said she looked forward to starting once a date is set.
The board also unanimously approved Sarah DeLuca as the high school mathematics instructional coach and Adam Poppin as the middle school English language arts teacher. In each case the superintendent presented credentials and the board approved the nominations without recorded dissent.
On policy matters, the board approved second readings of policy CF (school building administration) and EBAA (chemical hazards), and approved JLCE/JLCER (first aid and first aid administration procedure). The board tabled the second reading of policy FF (naming facilities) so it can be considered together with its associated procedure (FFR), which has not yet been drafted. The board also approved retiring two older accident-reporting policies that will be superseded by the updated first-aid policy framework.
The board voted to delegate authority to the superintendent to authorize summer hires so personnel needs can be addressed during the months when the board meets less frequently.
The board accepted two gifts: an $800 donation from the Mix and Mingle Square Dance Club for 8 Corner schools, and a $5,000 grant from the Maine Community Coordinators Collaborative to support a pilot ELL cosmetology program in partnership with Deering High School and local salons to help cover tools and training fees for students facing financial barriers.
