Parks staff outlines busy summer schedule, pool operations and July 4 plans

Jamie, a Parks and Recreation staff member, told the commission on June 3 that summer programming is in full swing: summer camp began at Cactus Canyon Junior High, sports camps and adult leagues have started or will start in the coming weeks, and the department has hired nearly 60 lifeguards and many seasonal rec leaders. Jamie said staff held an all‑staff training on May 16 to prepare part‑time employees for summer operations.
Jamie said the pool is open and that the first two sessions of swim lessons are completely full, with the third session nearly full; daily open‑swim counts have ranged from roughly 200 to 350 people, and Jamie said pool capacity is about 400. Jamie added that aquatic fees and recreation program fees were not being changed in the staff fee recommendation presented later in the meeting.
Other community engagement items Jamie highlighted included team talks produced by the Youth Advisory Council on the city’s YouTube channel, free popsicles at the library’s 'America Waves' event on June 10 at Complex Park, and free monthly pickleball lessons (the commission confirmed they run the 2nd Saturday each month at Prospector Park from 9–10 a.m.; preregistration required; ages 16+). Jamie also said the Rodeo Grounds are open and that staff plan a fall open‑house when conditions are cooler.
Jamie reviewed July 4 plans: a volleyball tournament begins at 7:45 a.m., a free community swim (9 a.m.–3 p.m.) will be offered courtesy of State Farm (sponsor Aaron McDermott), gates for the evening event at Superstition and Shadows Park open at 6 p.m., fireworks are scheduled for about 8:30 p.m. weather permitting, Apache Junction Little League will sponsor free watermelon, and food trucks will be on site for purchase. Jamie noted the band Over the Line will perform at a community event later in the summer.
