Riverside approves facade grants for downtown mural and awning

The board approved a $5,000 facade improvement grant for a mural at Devont Auto Service (20 E. Quincy) and an $810 reimbursement grant for an awning at June And Lark (39 E. Burlington); both were recommended by the Economic Development Commission.
Director Zavala told the board the Central Business District facade improvement grant has been popular and encourages businesses to upgrade signage, art and dumpster enclosures. The Economic Development Commission recommended a $5,000 reimbursement grant for a mural on the back of the Vaught/Devont Auto Service building (project cost $14,810) and a $810 grant for an awning at June And Lark (total cost $1,620).
Trustees moved and approved both grants by roll call; Zavala noted the mural grant covers up to 50% reimbursement (maximum $5,000) and is a reimbursement program: businesses pay costs and then submit for reimbursement. The board celebrated private investment in downtown and the program’s role encouraging improvements; the facade grant program balance was noted at $13,190 remaining after the June And Lark award.
