Pat O’Mara, deputy director of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs, updated commissioners on the department’s accreditation work with CAPRA (the Commission for the Accreditation of Parks and Recreation Agencies) and its membership in state and national professional associations.
O’Mara summarized the multiyear effort: a January 2024 accreditation kickoff, extensive documentation of 37 fundamental and 114 non‑fundamental standards (with 103 non‑fundamentals required for initial accreditation), an on‑site team visit in late May and a forthcoming report. He said the visiting team’s recommendation shared with staff is that the department will be recommended for accreditation; the final report was expected by mid‑month.
O’Mara described next steps if accreditation is confirmed: an all‑staff celebration, staff training and formation of teams to align internal policies to the new standard framework. He said accreditation will change the department’s standards and practices and that a structured multi‑year reporting and reaccreditation cycle will follow.
Commissioners and staff emphasized the work involved and congratulated department staff for leading the effort. No formal vote was required; O’Mara said staff would return with implementation plans.
