Habitat for Humanity, Lee County celebrate completion of 36-home McNeil Village

Habitat for Humanity of Lee and Hendry counties on June 2 presented plaques to Lee County commissioners recognizing the completion of McNeil Village, a 36-home affordable homeownership neighborhood in North Fort Myers.
"Nearly 50000 volunteer hours went into the creation of this neighborhood," Becky Lucas, the outgoing chief executive officer of Habitat for Humanity of Lee and Hendry counties, told commissioners. Lucas said construction began in February 2024 on roughly 10 acres and that the project used American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding for community infrastructure and later CDBG-DR funds to complete the last 14 homes in response to Hurricane Ian.
Lucas described the neighborhood as home to a mix of health-care workers, teachers, young families and others who make up a diverse homeowners association and thanked county partners, volunteers and donors for their roles. Commissioners congratulated Lucas and welcomed incoming CEO Everett Mickilvieen, praising Habitat's long-term partnership with Lee County and the organization's role in expanding affordable homeownership.
The presentation was ceremonial; no county appropriation or formal action was taken during the recognition. Habitat and county staff signaled plans for continued collaboration on affordable housing efforts and future ribbon-cuttings for related projects.
