Students honored at Barrow County meeting highlight leadership and sports achievements

The Barrow County Board of Education recognized student-athletes, standout seniors and youth-leadership participants during its regular meeting.
Caitlin Schmidt, athletic director at Apalachee High School, presented athletes who set school records and earned region and state accolades. "Adrianne, Khalil, Dylan, and Cameron made school history by setting a new school record in the 4 by 100 meter relay," Schmidt said as she introduced the Apalachee track team honorees. Principals and coaches from other schools — including Wanderer and BASA — introduced additional honorees and cited statistics such as batting averages, strikeouts and state finishes.
Students representing Youth Leadership Barrow described service projects and networking experiences. Ryan Bridal (Apalachee High School) and other student speakers said the program offered opportunities to visit the state capital, meet local business leaders and take part in Camp Twin Lakes. "It's helped you to see what you can do in your own community," one student said.
The recognitions section was strictly ceremonial; no policy or funding actions were proposed during these presentations. The board invited honored guests to depart after the recognitions and then continued with the agenda.
