Barrow County finance staff reports record sales-tax month, notes $400,000 audit recovery

Finance staff presented the district's May financial update and cautioned that a record sales-tax month included a one-time audit recovery.
"This was a record month," the finance presenter said. "We got $2,341,564.96. ... 400,000 of that was from an audit." The presenter said the district is up about 13% year over year but advised the board not to expect that rate to continue because part of the gain was an audit adjustment.
The presenter reviewed year-to-date figures through May 31, 2026: an unassigned fund balance of $63,900,000 and a total fund balance of $92,800,000; total year-to-date revenues of $205,300,000 and total year-to-date expenditures of $202,200,000. The special revenue fund and capital project totals were summarized (special revenue revenues $21,200,000 vs. expenditures $22,300,000; capital projects received $18,800,000 and spent $17,600,000). Debt service noted revenues of $8,600,000 and expenditures of $13,800,000 with a substantial fund balance carried from prior years.
The finance presenter closed by asking for questions; none were raised in the transcript. The board did not take any immediate budget action at the meeting; the figures were presented for information and future consideration.
