Barrow County school board approves routine business, honors spring student-athletes

The Barrow County Board of Education approved routine meeting business and spent the evening recognizing spring student-athletes from multiple high schools.
At the start of the June meeting the chair asked the board to adopt minutes for May meetings, approve the meeting agenda and accept the consent agenda; motions were made, seconded and approved without recorded roll-call tallies. Later the board approved a personnel report. Chair (speaker 2) also asked for a motion to go into executive session to interview applicants for the superintendent position; the motion was moved by Mister Calloway and seconded and approved.
The recognitions portion included athletic and student honors from Apalachee High School, Wanderer High School and Bassett/BASA. Dr. Bowen and athletic director Caitlin Schmidt highlighted team achievements and individual distinctions, including a school-record 4x100 relay and region championships. "My name is Caitlin Schmidt, and I am the proud athletic director at Apalachee High School," Schmidt said as she introduced student honorees.
The board’s business also included a finance update (see separate article) and a brief schedule note: the board said it will return for a work session on July 29. With no further business the board adjourned.
The meeting included a large block of student remarks from Youth Leadership Barrow participants describing community service and leadership experiences; the board opened that portion for student testimonials but took no formal action on those presentations.
