City staff told the Casa Grande study session the city is expanding hydration and cooling resources for people who may need respite from high temperatures.
"The city has ordered signage that will be placed at participating locations to identify sites where individuals can obtain water and access to air conditioning space during business hours," City Manager Steven Weaver said, noting there are currently 13 participating locations inside the city limits and that most are open roughly 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday; some locations, including public libraries and CHIPS, will remain open until 7 p.m.
Weaver said staff identified a service gap between about 7 p.m. and 10 p.m., when temperatures often remain high, and is exploring opening the Lynn Cole Recreation Center from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. during summer months as an evening hydration and cooling station. Staff said they have discussed the concept with the Boys & Girls Club, which expressed support, and are working to identify staffing needs before implementation.
Council members welcomed the plan and suggested exploring additional uses of recreation space, including gym access for children during evening hours. Weaver said staff will evaluate options and operational costs and return with details.
If implemented, the expanded hours are intended as a temporary, summer-season measure; staff said they are coordinating with nonprofit and faith-based partners to support supplies such as water and snacks.
