The Caswell County Schools board approved first readings for a set of spring policy updates recommended by the North Carolina School Boards Association but removed two items from tonight’s vote for additional review.
Superintendent ("Superintendent") guided trustees through the packet and highlighted several policies for attention, including agenda procedures (policy 23-30), parental involvement (policy 13 series), the new employee audio/video recording policy (73-25) and wireless communication/search language (policy 43-18). "So 73 25 is a total new policy to address video and audio recordings made by employees at school," the superintendent said, describing the policy as new and requiring discussion.
Several board members expressed concerns about what the wireless‑device and recording language would permit, specifically whether it opened the door to searches of student devices or employee recordings without sufficient limits. "I don't wanna open the door to search of wireless communication devices because they think a student has taken a picture or a video," one trustee said, urging caution.
A motion to approve the policies for first reading with the exception of policy 43-18 and 73-25—so that those two could receive more detailed review and possible revision—was moved and carried.
Trustees set follow-up work to review the withheld policies in a work session and to ensure handbook and employee guidance align with any adopted language before the start of school.
