PGCPS work group: grant strategies and county funding timing will shape realignment recommendations

At the May 11 strategic realignment work group meeting, participants said funding timing and grant access will determine how ambitious the district's changes can be and urged additional outreach to revenue and grant authorities.

Supervisor Andrea Badenbaugh presented on grant opportunities and life cycles, and subcommittee members said the next steps include debriefing grant findings and exploring new revenue-access points. "We had a great discussion this evening around grants," Dr. Jamie Bowers said, describing questions about grant types, procurement and community partners that could expand funding options.

Participants repeatedly stressed that planning depends on county funding. One committee member summarized the situation: "I know $20,000,000 has been committed, but there's $30,000,000 that we need in addition to a total of $50,000,000," and said many engagement and implementation plans hinge on whether the county provides the remaining funds by early June.

Board members asked staff to invite a representative from the county revenue authority for a briefing; one board member pointed to local examples of revenue generation from speed-camera proceeds in District Heights and suggested staff follow up with the city representative. No formal action was taken; the group scheduled its next meeting for May 26 to continue work depending on funding clarity.

The superintendent, addressed near the meeting's close, thanked participants and noted continued collaboration between the board, staff and external partners.
