Volo Aire opens at Jenkins Park; ponds restocked and playground grant work resumes

The Parks & Recreation Committee reported several updates for Jenkins Park on May 20, including the May 1 opening of the Volo Aire and a restocking of the ponds on April 30.
Chair Bill Bechtel thanked roughly 25 adult and 12 youth volunteers from the April 18 work party and noted that the ponds were restocked with largemouth bass, black crappie, blue gill, channel catfish and fathead minnows. Discussion included setting a date for a ribbon-cutting celebration for the Volo Aire.
Committee members said they received the playground audit and are re-exploring the NYPlays grant for Jenkins Park; Kelly Jasinski, Bill Bechtel and Lynnette Ziskin have met with playground companies for plans and quotes. The committee awarded the mowing contract for Jenkins Park to Adirondack Sign Co. and expects the bottom rail for the dog fence to be installed within 10 days.
Other items discussed included scheduling the Community Library Story Walk in mid-June with an educational dinosaurs-and-fossils theme and the BUSA soccer camp scheduled for Aug. 10–14 at Jenkins Park. Committee members also flagged a wood-chip pile that is being stolen and blocking park access and agreed to pursue finishing a new trail around the ponds and exploring a formal easement from Beechwood Dr. to Jenkins Park. A volunteer work party will be planned to remove Phragmites along the east entrance.
