Leech Library trustees authorize up to $5,000 for urgent electrical work ahead of carpet replacement

Leech Library trustees on June 4 authorized up to $5,000 for immediate electrical work so repairs can be completed before carpet replacement, voting to fund the work after the library director described recent building repairs and the phasing plan for finishing work.
Library Director Donna reported that remediation from earlier leaks is complete, that most drywall repairs are finished and that painting has begun in the teen area. She told trustees a recent radiator leak discovered by ReArc was repaired the same day by ENE and dried by SERVPRO; a separate kitchen-sink leak was fixed by Mainline, which provided a 15 percent discount. “Remediation work is complete,” Donna said, and staff are coordinating carpet delivery and phasing for replacement and cleaning.
Donna asked the board to allow an electrician to replace burned-out bulbs, clean and service globe fixtures and complete related electrical tasks ahead of carpeting. She estimated — based on prior visits and how often an electrician is required — that costs could be “in the range of $2,500,” but noted invoices can vary. Trustee Jan McLaughlin moved to authorize the work; the motion was amended on the floor to cap the expenditure at $5,000 and the board approved the amendment and motion.
Trustees discussed funding options, including using under-spent supply lines or trustee-account funds, and Donna said finance staff are reviewing operating funds and emergency maintenance trust options. Donna also said the project will factor into phase 2 planning and that she will present funding timing and scope when she appears before town council on June 15.
The action clears the way for the electrician to be scheduled in the next two weeks so the work will not interfere with carpet installation and phasing. The board instructed staff to proceed and to notify trustees if costs appeared likely to exceed the $5,000 cap.
The board heard the building update as part of the same discussion: painting has begun, roof water-testing with an envelope consultant is being scheduled, and ReArc is helping plan carpet cleaning and phasing. Trustees asked for timelines and cost estimates for phase 2 at a future meeting.
