Douglas County commissioners voted to expand Douglas Area Rural Transit (DART) service into South County/Topaz (the Topaz Ranch Estates area) with a proposed start as early as July 1. Community Services Director Brooke Ady described a phased rollout to add weekday fixed routes with three daily trips that will bring residents to Carson Valley destinations including the community center, Walmart and medical appointments.
Ady said the route is designed to be efficient: the driver for the South County route would begin and end at the TRE community center, where the vehicle will be parked, avoiding a lengthy deadhead to start each day. She summarized outreach to residents and a small grant portfolio that has incrementally funded vehicles and drivers. "Our goal is to help bring individuals in so they can go to shopping, medical appointments," Ady said, noting outreach to Topaz community leaders and seniors.
Staff estimated the additional fuel cost at roughly $800–$1,000 per month for the new service — about $12,000 per year on the high end — with grant support covering staffing and other portions of operating costs. The board approved the expansion (4–0; one commissioner absent) and asked for a six‑month status update and a one‑year cost‑benefit analysis to evaluate ridership and fiscal sustainability.
TRE trustees and South County residents voiced strong support during public comment, and staff said they will offer signage, materials and direct phone support for residents who need help using the system.
