Gurnee board names two to Planning & Zoning board and recognizes veterans, honors two firefighter promotions

At the June 1 meeting Mayor Thomas Hood recommended appointments to the Planning & Zoning Board and the board approved both. Trustee Woodside moved to appoint Kathy Blair; Trustee Thorson seconded and the motion carried on roll call. Trustee Garner moved to appoint Chris Stevens; Trustee Ross seconded and the appointment also passed.
Mayor Hood read a proclamation designating June 12, 2026, as Women Veterans Recognition Day in Gurnee and invited women veterans in the audience to stand for recognition. The board also recognized numerous local veterans during the Hometown Heroes banner presentation; mayoral remarks listed multiple honorees and thanked them for their service.
Chief John Kavanaugh described the promotional testing process for the fire department and introduced two promotional appointments. Brandon Roberts and Alex Rank were each sworn in as fire lieutenants, took the oath of office and thanked family, the mayor and board. Chief Kavanaugh praised the candidates' leadership, training and service during remarks to the board.
