Gurnee imposes six-month moratorium on industrial data center construction

The Village of Gurnee on June 1 imposed a six-month moratorium on construction of data centers within industrial zoning districts to allow staff time to review existing local regulations, see how other communities regulate data centers and prepare any recommended zoning text amendments.
A village staff member said there are currently no applications for data centers in Gurnee, but the measure is intended to be proactive: "We're requesting a 6 month moratorium, to do that research," staff said, adding that similar moratoria have been used previously to give staff time to study issues before the village adopts new code language. The moratorium will let staff present potential changes to the Planning and Zoning Board and then back to the village board for action.
Trustee Woodside seconded Trustee Thorsonson's motion; the ordinance passed by roll call. The moratorium is administrative, intended to preserve the village's ability to craft regulations before any large-scale data center proposals arrive.
