Multiple residents raised concerns about the town’s administrative staffing and payroll during the May 20 meeting, asking whether a bookkeeper and a secretary have been hired and how employees will be paid if those positions remain vacant.
Chair (S3) said the town had identified an experienced municipal bookkeeper who has offered to come in and assist on an interim basis and that the accountant and other staff would step in so paychecks and vouchers are processed "by the end of the day." He told the meeting, "We have people to help us... We have the accountant. We have other people that'll step in and help us. ... We'll do the paychecks so no employee goes with them."
A resident cited a specific annual salary figure for the bookkeeper position — "$58,058.99 a year" — and asked whether pay rates and hiring decisions match the town’s established compensation and hiring procedures. Board members said hiring remains in process and that candidates had been narrowed to a shortlist; one member said interviews occurred last week and decisions were imminent.
The board agreed to continue recruiting to fill both bookkeeper and secretary roles and to provide clearer communication on hiring and the handling of sensitive financial records; members also said they would ensure bonding and oversight of any interim staff who handle town funds.
